Notice of Annual General Meeting - 20th March 2020

Nomination Form for Committee Members
I was recently contacted by Michael Knight who has launched a community seed swapping website, it’s purpose being to facilitate the swapping and exchange of heritage/open pollinated seeds (not hybrids). His aim is to promote the practice of seed saving in Great Britain in much the same way as ‘face to face’ seed swaps do, but instead doing on a wider scale online. Use of his website is, and will continue to be, completely free.
The web address is

This is an urgent appeal for help from Dick, our Trading Hut Manager, who is currently preparing the Trading Hut rota for 2020.  He urgently needs volunteers who are prepared to give up one or two Sunday mornings during the whole of next year.  It’s not even the whole morning, just from 9.00 to 10.30.
Unless enough volunteers come forward to help fill the gaps, as it is not fair to expect the same people to man the Hut week in week out, then unfortunately the Trading Hut will not be open every Sunday next year.
If you are able to help, please get in touch urgently with either myself or Dick.
Have a wonderful Christmas.

Seed Potato orders must be in by 1st December 2019. The current order form is attached here.

Hedges and Fences

Members are reminded that it is their responsibility to keep all hedges and fences bordering their plots in a tidy condition.  If anyone is unable to take care of this themselves, they should speak to their site stewards so that some help can be found.

2019 Presentation Evening

Our Presentation Evening will be held on 4th October 2019 at the Catmose Club.  The evening will kick off at 19:30 and a light buffet will be served.  All are welcome.

2019 Scarecrow Competition

Please see attached poster for this year’s Scarecrow Competition.  Everyone is invited to take part, and your Scarecrow can be put up as soon as you like.
To make things easier for our judges, could you please let me know if you are planning to take part and if children are involved, could you also let me have their names.  This way I can provide our judges with a list of who is taking part so that they are not having to search around the sites.
If you do plan to take part …. good luck!

The Late Mick Gardiner

Mick Gardiner’s funeral will be on Wednesday 22 May at 12.00 at St Joseph’s. Unfortunately, I’m not here next week but I know some old colleagues will be going along to pay their respects and represent OHGAS.

The Late Mick Gardiner

I am very sorry to have to pass on the news that Mick Gardiner died on the 5th May. Mick was my predecessor as Chairman of OHGAS, serving for something like 14 years up to 2010. Before then he had been on the committee for longer than anyone could remember, but certainly from a time when minutes of meetings consisted of;  “All in favour?… Aye…mine’s a pint…...meeting closed”. Many of you will remember him at Brooke Road where he kept us in order with his shotgun, baling scythe and various none too friendly goats and ferrets. During his time as Chairman, we had empty plots and were under pressure to lose land at Burley and Willow. We all firmly believed that the demand for allotments would return and it was to Mick’s credit that we hung on to all our land. Mick was a countryman, last of the line. Thanks for the memories Mick and our condolences to your family and friends.

Members are respectfully reminded that they must not go onto other member's plots without that member's permission!

The Trading Hut

The Trading Hut will be open on Wednesday evenings from Wednesday 1st May 2019 until Wednesday 26th June 2019, between the hours of 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm. Doors will continue to be open as usual on Sunday mornings between the hours of 9.00 am to 10.30 am.
Members are reminded that the Trading Hut supplies top quality products at very favourable prices, with all proceeds being ploughed back into the Society. If only small quantities are required, we can oblige. However, with trade falling, it is very much a case of ‘use it, or we will lose it!’, so members are please requested to support this valuable facility which is voluntarily manned for their benefit.

Vacancies for Stewards

We desperately need a steward at our Elm Close site (ideally two) and an additional steward for Willow Close.  If you are interested in taking on this role, please contact Penny on and she will provide you with further information.

OHGAS Working Party

We are currently looking for volunteers from our membership to assist with site maintanance over the Summer months, which allows costs and rents to stay at a minimum, along with building a happy community within our allotment sites.

If you feel that you have a little bit of time to spare and would like to join your site's working party group, then please email me at so that I can add you to our list of volunteers who we can call on as and when required.

2019 AGM

Our 2019 AGM took place on Friday 8th March 2019.  Full minutes will be circulated shortly.

We have been approached by the Rutland Water Nature Reserve Officer asking whether any of our members would be interested in purchasing bean poles from their coppice woodland.

The poles would come in bundles of 10 of roughly the same length (some maybe 7ft, or some 8ft) and they would not be pointed.
They would be delivered to your allotment site at a cost of £5.00 per pack of 10.
If you are interested, please let me know ASAP (unfortunately I need to get orders for 25 plus packs for this to happen).
